In 1978, he graduated from the Radio Physics Faculty of Belarusian State University with a degree in “Radio Physics.”

He began his career at the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus at the Institute of Physics, where he advanced from junior to leading researcher.

In 1986, he defended his dissertation for the degree of Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences. In 1990, for his body of work “Non-equilibrium processes in transition layers plasma – solid body and their influence on the efficiency of plasma treatment of materials,” he became a laureate of the Lenin Komsomol Prize of Belarus in the field of science and technology.

Since 1988, he taught at BSUIR, BSU, and BSPU, where he delivered lecture courses in general physics, technology of structural materials, and others.

In 1993, he was awarded the academic title of Associate Professor.

In June 2002, he was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Physics and Technology of the Institute for the Training of Scientific Personnel of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. In March 2005 – Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, in December 2005 – Rector of the state educational institution “Institute for the Training of Scientific Personnel of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.” In April 2015, he moved to the position of Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs. Since September 2023, he has been Head of the Department of Natural Sciences of the State Educational Institution “University of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.”

He has been awarded the Certificate of Honour of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, the Certificate of Honour of the Higher Attestation Commission of Belarus, the badge of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus “Excellence in Education,” and others.

V.V. Shkurko is the author of 90 scientific works, including 2 monographs, 3 textbooks, and 1 invention.

Research interests:

physics of interaction of high-power laser radiation with condensed matter;
plasma physics;
anisotropic effects in the dynamics of suprathermal particles of laser plasma expanding into vacuum in the zone of its contact with the irradiated surface;
features of charged particle transport in transition layers plasma – solid body;
influence of induced magnetic field on the properties of near-surface layers of rarefied plasma.
