The University of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Held a Unified Information Day
On April 23, 2026, the Educational Institution “University of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus” held a Unified Information Day on the topic: “CHERNOBYL: FROM REVIVAL TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT”.
In his address, the Vice-Rector for Academic and Methodological Work, Egor Vladimirovich Gusakov, noted that on April 26, 1986, the largest radiation accident occurred at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. It had large-scale economic and socio-psychological consequences, affecting not only our country but also many European states.
The President of the Republic of Belarus, Alexander Grigoryevich Lukashenko, on April 25, 2025, while hearing a report on the development of the districts of the Gomel region affected by the Chernobyl accident, said: “We have done a great deal, we took unpopular steps – we did not hand out a ruble per person, as was customary, but concentrated on projects that people needed: housing, clean water, sewerage, wastewater disposal, gasification, and so on. Time has shown that we acted absolutely correctly.”
In his report, Egor Vladimirovich also noted that enormous work has been carried out to return lands to agricultural use. Special agrochemical and agrotechnical protective measures (based on scientific developments) have been organised to ensure the production of clean, high-quality products that meet the strictest standards.
At the end of his address, E.V. Gusakov emphasised that radiation monitoring is carried out throughout the country to ensure the safety of the population and the environment, as well as to assess the radiation situation. The objects of observation are atmospheric air, surface and groundwater, soils of fallow lands, agricultural soils, and forest fund lands. These issues are under the constant control of the Head of State, A.G. Lukashenko, who regularly visits the affected regions and assesses the dynamics of the processes.
