The Department of Natural Sciences of the Institute for the Training of Scientific Personnel was founded on October 15, 2007 by order of the Rector No. 53 of 12.10.2007 on the basis of a decision of the Academic Council of the Institute as a graduating department in natural sciences in connection with the opening of Master’s training (Master’s program) in 2007. The first Head of the Department (on a voluntary basis) was the Rector of the Institute for the Training of Scientific Personnel – Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Associate Professor Vladimir Valentinovich Shkurko.

In 2018, the department was merged with the Department of Information Technologies and was renamed the Department of Natural Sciences and Information Technologies (order of the Rector No. 217 of 06.11.2018). The Department was headed by Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Sergei Evgenievich Dromashko, who headed the department for the subsequent 4 years.

In August 2023, the department was again transformed into the Department of Natural Sciences. Shkurko V.V. was elected Head, and he currently heads the department.

Leading specialists from research institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus are involved in conducting classes in professional training disciplines. In accordance with the focus of Master’s training for subsequent scientific activity, this approach most effectively ensures that students receive knowledge and information about the latest and most promising scientific research, developments and achievements of domestic science.

Research work of students is carried out on the basis of the University, as well as in the institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus of the departments of physics, mathematics and informatics, physical and technical sciences, chemistry and earth sciences and others, with which cooperation agreements have been concluded in the field of personnel support for scientific and educational activities. Supervision of research work and Master’s theses is carried out by leading specialists of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.

One of the most important areas of the Department’s educational work is the preparation of Master’s students of the University (all specialities), as well as applicants of scientific organizations of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus for taking the candidate differentiated credit in the general education discipline “Fundamentals of Information Technologies.”
